Brass bands include 3 types of horn: tenor or E♭ (“E flat”) horns; baritone or B♭ (“B flat”) horns; and a flugelhorn. We will include euphoniums in this group as well because they are closely related to, and pitched the same as, the baritone horns, although technically a euphonium is a small tuba!
Also, the flugelhorn, despite its name, is more closely related to the cornet. It was developed by adding valves to the bugle, a simple brass instrument still used in the military and often heard on Remembrance Sunday in November playing the Last Post and Reveille.
You can learn more about horns in a brass band, and listen to our very own Solo Tenor Horn player Chris Ord introduce the instrument, at the North Tyneside Brass in Schools website.
